The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) is pleased to announce a competition for research funding for UI graduate students engaged in research on the cultures and institutions of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region.
CAPS Graduate Student Conference Travel Award
Application Deadline: 30 days prior to start date of travel
Guidelines
The CAPS Graduate Student Conference Travel Award is for graduate students of either master or doctoral level who need financial support to attend a conference related to, or present at a conference on the topic of, the East Asia, Southeast Asia, or Pacific region.
Traveling to a conference in the U.S. or Canada? CAPS Graduate Student Conference Travel Awards are up to $1,000 for domestic travel.
Traveling to a conference internationally? CAPS Graduate Student Conference Travel Awards are up to $2,000 for international travel.
Applicants are encouraged to supplement CAPS awards with other sources of funding.
Applications
Applicants should submit the following:
- A proposal of maximum 500 words explaining the intellectual rationale and feasibility of their project;
- Current curriculum vitae (maximum five pages);
- One page budget, including other pending/granted sources of funding;
- Name of your advisor and confirmation they are aware you are applying for this funding;

CAPS Graduate Student Fellowship
Application Deadline: November 1
Guidelines
The CAPS Graduate Student Fellowship provides PhD candidates who have passed their prelims or comprehensive exams to benefit from a one-time fellowship of up to a $2,000 salary, to enable them to cover research-related expenses or for time to pursue their scholarly research activities to facilitate completion of their doctoral degree in a timely manner. Successful candidates will be invited to deliver a presentation at a CAPS research seminar.
Funds will be available immediately upon notification of the award and should be used before June 30 of the following year unless prior approval is obtained.
Applications
Applicants should submit the following:
- A proposal of maximum 500 words explaining how the applicant will benefit from the fellowship with respect to completing their doctoral thesis;
- Current curriculum vitae (maximum five pages);
- One page budget, including other pending/granted sources of funding;
- Name of your advisor and confirmation they are aware you are applying for this funding.
