Scholarship application submission deadline: Thursday, October 1, 2026, 11:59 p.m. Pacific Standard Time

The Gilman Scholarship program aims to support students of limited financial means to study and intern abroad, including in-person academic and internship programs, and the countries and regions where they go by offering scholarships to those who might otherwise not participate due to financial constraints. The scholarship is open to U.S. citizen undergraduate students who are receiving Federal Pell Grant funding at a two-year or four-year college or university. Awards range from $100 to $5,000 for a semester or academic year (average scholarship $3,000); summer or winter (average scholarship $1,500). There is no minimum program length requirement.

University of Iowa students who complete and submit the Gilman application before the published deadline are eligible to receive the A Morse Gilman Applicant Scholarship of $1,000. There is no additional application for this award; students will be notified following submission and advisor certification. The receipt of this scholarship is not associated with, nor dependent on, the award decision of the Benjamin A. Gilman International Scholarship (determined by IIE.org). This award will be valid only for participation in UI-approved Study Abroad programs, is non-renewable, and students may receive the A Morse Gilman Applicant Scholarship only once, though students can apply for the Gilman Scholarship more than once, until receiving the scholarship.
