The Department of Languages, Literatures, Linguistics and Cultures and the Johnson County United Nations Association is hosting Jarrett James, the UN Youth Observer to the UN for a conversation with UI students.
Meet the UN Youth Observer for a conversation about how you can become involved locally and globally in civic engagement and public service careers. Share your thoughts on international issues and global policies with Jarrett as he travels the US to learn about and share the perspectives of young people.
Snacks from Oasis Falafel will be provided.
The UNA-USA Youth Observer to the UN elevates youth voices in the global policy dialogue around international issues. For a one-year term, an American between the ages of 18 and 25 is selected to engage and connect young people in the U.S. to the work of the UN. The Youth Observer travels throughout the U.S. to discover the issues important to young Americans and participates as a UNA-USA delegate at UN conferences.
Jarrett’s work with the United Nations Association of the United States of America included serving as Lead Ambassador for a Sustainable Future and co-organizing the inaugural Sustainable Communities Summit, which brought together stakeholders from across the country to discuss the future of our cities. He holds a B.A. in Global Liberal Studies from New York University, where he concentrated in Politics, Rights, and Development and studied in New York City, Paris, Shanghai, and Abu Dhabi. His senior thesis examined the political economy of housing affordability in the United States. He is a community planner and housing strategist working at the intersection of public service, land use, and sustainability. He currently serves as the Township Planner for Upper Merion Township, one of Pennsylvania’s fastest-growing municipalities, where he leads long-range planning and land development for a township Fortune ranked the second best place in the nation for families, home to the third largest mall in America.
This event is supported by University of Iowa International Programs and the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization.
