Documentary Screening: “Into The Mist” Remembering Dor Bahadur Bista – The Pioneer of Nepali Anthropology: With the support from Eastern Iowa Nepali Society & Co-sponsorship by South Asian Studies Program and the Department of Anthropology, the Nepali Student Association (NSA) at the University of Iowa, is delighted to present a special screening of a remarkable documentary directed by Dr. Sachin Ghimire and Gaurav KC, celebrating the life and legacy of Dor Bahadur Bista — a visionary anthropologist and sociologist who reshaped the intellectual and cultural landscape of Nepal. Often regarded as the pioneer of Nepali anthropology, Bista’s groundbreaking work helped us understand Nepal’s rich ethnic, cultural, and social diversity through an authentic Nepali perspective. Dor Bahadur Bista was more than a scholar — he was a reformer and a bold thinker who challenged deeply rooted hierarchies and questioned the cultural fatalism that often hindered Nepal’s progress. His seminal book, Fatalism and Development, remains one of the most influential analyses of Nepali society, exploring themes of inequality, social mobility, and the need for modern, inclusive thought. His ideas continue to inspire generations of scholars, activists, and dreamers striving for a more equitable Nepal. This powerful documentary captures Bista’s intellectual brilliance, his humble beginnings, and the mystery surrounding his disappearance — a story that continues to intrigue many. Through interviews, rare footage, and heartfelt reflections, the film brings to life Bista’s vision of bridging tradition and modernity, offering viewers a chance to see Nepal through his profound anthropological lens. More than just a film screening, this event is a celebration of knowledge, identity, and community. It invites us all to reflect on Bista’s enduring influence and the continued relevance of his ideas in shaping Nepal’s future. The NSA is honored to host this event — a space for connection, conversation, and inspiration. Join us as we honor Dor Bahadur Bista’s remarkable contributions and engage in meaningful dialogue about his influence on Nepal’s social and cultural journey. Let’s come together — students, scholars, and well-wishers — to celebrate our shared heritage and the thinkers who continue to inspire our path forward.
