Purpose

The Provost’s Global Forum is the premier annual event on campus focused on international and global issues. The forum brings together experts from the faculty and leading voices from a variety of areas (business, technology, education, politics, and civil society, including projects focused on the environment, human rights, development, citizen diplomacy) to raise awareness about and contribute to debate on the foremost issues in globalization that face us today. In addition to serving the University of Iowa community broadly, the forum endeavors to build connections between the University and the state of Iowa, and positions the UI as a national node in discussions of global affairs.

The organizer(s) and topic of the annual forum will be selected by the associate provost and dean of International Programs upon the recommendation of a committee selected by IP leadership. In announcing the competition, the provost may from time to time give priority to a specific issue in, or approach to, globalization. Particular consideration will be given to proposals that integrate the PGF into the curriculum.

Organizers will explore ways to carry the issues outward from the UI campus through publication avenues or media outlets, including articles in state and national newspapers, magazines, and television as appropriate. The forum will also include the Joel Barkan Memorial Lecture.

Deadline

April 1 of the academic year prior to the one in which funding programming would take place

Eligibility

University of Iowa tenured, tenure-track, instructional-track, clinical, and research faculty.

Terms of Award

Up to $20,000 will be awarded. The award does not allow funding of faculty and graduate assistant salaries. Organizers may choose to use the funds to bring multiple speakers to campus; or they may focus on one or two high-profile speakers. Funding is available to support programming in the academic year following the spring application deadline. Spring and fall events will be given equal consideration. However, because of logistical concerns, spring events are preferred. The Provost’s Global Forum event must include the Joel Barkan Memorial Lecture—to be considered as part of your overall budget.

Evaluation Criteria and Selection Process

Proposals for the Provost’s Global Forum are reviewed considering the following criteria:

• clear emphasis on global topics, contexts, issues, questions, or aesthetics
• demonstration of the impact that the project would have in expanding knowledge of key global topics in the University and the state of Iowa
• a convincing account of objectives, methods, procedures, and anticipated outcomes
• list of departments, programs, or groups on campus likely to participate or benefit
• description of possibilities for community participation (if appropriate)

While no matching funds are required, applicants should indicate additional sources of funding for which they intend to apply, from within the University or from external funding agencies.

The committee to review Provost’s Global Forum proposals is appointed and chaired by the associate provost and dean of International Programs.

  • A proposal template is available to download and use. We encourage you to use this template as it includes headers for the questions for which you will need to respond
• Curriculum Vitae (2 pages maximum) for each PI
