The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) is pleased to announce a competition for research funding for UI graduate students engaged in research on the cultures and institutions of East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region.
CAPS Graduate Conference Travel Award

Guidelines
The CAPS Graduate Conference Travel Award is for graduate students of either master or doctoral level who need financial support to attend a conference with a presentation on studies on East Asia, Southeast Asia, or the Pacific region. The award will be up to $1,000 for traveling to conferences domestically and $2,000 for traveling to conferences internationally.
Funds will be available immediately upon notification of the award and should be used before June 30 of the following year unless prior approval is obtained.
Applicants are encouraged to supplement CAPS awards with other sources of funding.
Applications
Applicants should submit the following:
- A proposal of maximum 500 words explaining the intellectual rationale and feasibility of their project;
- Current curriculum vitae (maximum 5 pages);
- One page budget, including other pending/granted sources of funding;
- A letter of endorsement from their thesis advisor;
- Send applications and supporting materials to dongwang-liu@uiowa.edu for CAPS Award Committee to review

CAPS Graduate Fellowship

Guidelines
The CAPS Graduate Fellowship provides PhD students who have passed their prelims or comprehensive exams to benefit from a one-time stipend up to $2,000 to enable them to cover research-related expenses or for time to pursue their scholarly research activities to facilitate completion of their doctoral degree in a timely manner. Successful candidates will be invited to deliver a presentation at a CAPS research seminar.
Funds will be available immediately upon notification of the award and should be used before June 30 of the following year unless prior approval is obtained.
Applications
Applicants should submit the following:
- A proposal of maximum 500 words explaining how the applicant will benefit from the fellowship with respect to completing their doctoral thesis;
- Current curriculum vitae (maximum 5 pages);
- One page budget, including other pending/granted sources of funding;
- A letter of endorsement from their thesis advisor;
- Send applications and supporting materials to dongwang-liu@uiowa.edu for the CAPS Award Committee to review
