Complete the Study Abroad Plans Survey and learn the basics

Required: Submit the Study Abroad Plans Survey (you will need to log in with your HawkID and password). This helps our office direct you to next steps in the program research and advising process. Note that the survey will say "Calendar Year 2027".

Within one (1) business day of submitting the Study Abroad Plans Survey, you will receive an email from our office with next steps.

Optional: Complete Discover Study Abroad (DSA), a one-time, 30-minute session that provides an overview of study abroad in general and the steps you'll take to find and apply for the right international opportunity. DSA can be completed two ways:

• Option 1: Zoom session (synchronous)

  Tuesdays at 12:30 p.m.

  Email study-abroad@uiowa.edu with the date you wish to attend and your UID number. The Study Abroad office will email you a confirmation. Five minutes before the session, you will receive an email with the Zoom meeting link included.

• Option 2: ICON course (asynchronous)

  Do DSA on your own schedule!

Meet with a Study Abroad Advisor

Within one (1) business day of submitting the Study Abroad Plans Survey (see above), you will receive an email with your next steps - either attending an Open Advising Session or scheduling an appointment with a Study Abroad advisor.

Apply for a passport

Passport processing takes months, so don't wait to apply! Most passports are good for 10 years.

Note: if you have a passport but it was issued before you were 16, you'll most likely need to get a new one.
