Bjøro will discuss the importance of nurses as they make up the vast majority of the health workforce, and in many countries around the world they may be the only health professional an individual meets during their life. They are a vital piece to attain universal healthcare coverage for all people. However, nurses are often not represented at the policy table where decisions are made. The International Council of Nurses (ICN), of which Bjøro is currently 2nd vice president, has a central role to play in advocating for health for all people and greater investment in the nursing workforce.

“Our discussion with Karen Bjøro takes on added importance given the imperative for enhanced coordination to combat health challenges facing our planet,” remarked Russ Ganim, associate provost and dean of International Programs. “It is increasingly apparent that disruption due to geo-political, economic, and climate instability has created a need for greater strategic planning to tackle inevitable crises in the global health space.”

In addition to her work with the ICN, Bjøro has participated at the World Health Assembly and the WHO European Regional Committee on numerous occasions representing ICN—the global voice of nursing.

“It is an honor for me to be featured in the UI Global Alumni Spotlight Series,” said Bjøro. “This opportunity has made me stop and reflect on the past 40 years of my career in nursing. It has been an exciting journey and I truly appreciate the opportunity to be in the spotlight. I hope my experience can be an inspiration and maybe even excite other nurses to seek adventure and opportunities in global nursing and health policy.”
