Undergraduate Students

Success at Iowa Stage 1 

Complete the Getting Started and Stage 1 (Plan) sections of the Success at Iowa course on Iowa Courses Online (ICON). The course is open August 1, 2021. Success at Iowa is a required course for all incoming students and will deliver content applicable to your transition and success at the University of Iowa in 5 stages. The course begins prior to your first semester and continues through the first 5 weeks of the semester. Once in ICON, make sure you are in the correct semester (Fall 2021) to locate the course. 

Orientation Tile in MyUI

Complete all of the action items in the Orientation Tile in MyUI. Your online orientation experience is tailored to you individually. You will learn more about the college you are admitted to at Iowa, specific programs you may have been accepted into (Honors, Advantage Iowa, etc.), as well as the tools you will use to be a successful student at Iowa. Login to MyUI with your HawkID and password and navigate to the tile labeled Orientation (the tiles are in alphabetical order) on the Home page. Follow the steps in the tile and complete all of the items through Academic Advising. You will complete the last section, called New Student Check-list after you register for classes with your advisor.  

English Proficiency Evaluation (EPE) 

General information about the English Proficiency Evaluation (EPE) and what results mean are on the University of Iowa (UI) ESL Programs website. If you are required to sit for an English Proficiency Evaluation, one will be scheduled for you. The $120 fee for the test will be added to your first University bill. 
 

Orientation Advising and Summer 2021 Registration

All new international students will meet virtually with an academic advisor for their orientation advising appointment. At this appointment your academic advisor will help you plan and register for your spring semester schedule. You will receive an email with information about the date, time and specific link to use for your virtual appointment in June 2021.

Orientation Fee

All new undergraduate international students are assessed a $120 orientation fee by International Student and Scholar Services.

Summer 2021: Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, the University of Iowa will be hosting online Summer 2021 International Student Orientation June 9-11, 2021. All new international students will be participating in orientation, regardless if you will be starting your studies on-campus or online in the summer 2021 session. You will connect with other new students and receive the support you need to succeed through this virtual experience.  

Fall 2021: ISSS will be hosting Fall 2021 International Student Orientation August 16-20, 2021. All new international students will be participating in orientation. You will connect with other new students and receive the support you need to succeed through your orientation experience. Due to COVID-19 safety precautions, ISSS is monitoring health and safety guidance to plan for orientation. ISSS will share details about the orientation experience at the Pre-Arrival Webinar: Understanding Orientation Expectations, Responsibilities, and Placement Tests on Friday, July 2, 2021. Participants will have an opportunity to ask questions at this webinar to help prepare for orientation. We look forward to supporting your transition as you start your journey as a Hawkeye! 

How to Participate in Orientation

  • Users in the mainland China need to use a client version 4.5.4 available at meetzoom.net/download  
  • Mark your calendar for the orientation date and start time in YOUR TIME ZONE. All times on schedule are U.S. Central Time.  
  • Connect to Zoom 5-10 minutes prior to the orientation start time. We will be testing audio 5 minutes before the start time. 

Orientation Schedule 

A full schedule of orientation events will be sent to your University of Iowa email account. Complete all the items on the Pre-Arrival Checklist in iHawk to receive your schedule. Attendance is expected at all orientation sessions. 

Small Groups 

You will be assigned to a Small Group where you will connect with other new students, participate in activities, and ask questions to support your transition to the University of Iowa. Your Small Group Leaders are experienced current students who will facilitate your Small Group Meetings.  

Orientation ICON Site 

Resources and video recordings of orientation sessions will be posted in the International Student Orientation ICON site. ISSS will send an invitation email to your University of Iowa email account and you must accept the invitation to access the ICON site.  

On Iowa! 

Get your start as a Hawkeye at On Iowa!—a welcome and University community immersion event where all members of the Class of 2025 and new transfer students will:

  • Make friends with new and returning students,
  • Discover Hawkeye traditions and what it means to be a University of Iowa student,
  • Prepare to excel in your classes,
  • Explore activities and student organizations, and
  • Commit to The IOWA Challenge!

New students are expected to attend the On Iowa! small groups Monday, August 16 - Saturday, August 21. You will receive your small group assignment when you check-in to the On Iowa! program during move-in. New students moving in to the residence halls will receive On Iowa! materials at that time. New students living off-campus and new transfer students should check-in to On Iowa! in the Iowa Memorial Union.

On Iowa! will help you become familiar with the University of Iowa community and resources prior to the first day of classes. You’ll have opportunities to explore campus resources and the Iowa City community, think about your goals for the semester, and talk about what it means to thrive as a Hawkeye, both in-person and virtually.

During On Iowa!, you can participate in a variety of activities—including small group sessions, virtual late night programming, fitness classes, resource information sessions, scavenger hunts, a facts and folklore tour, and more!

Orientation Fee
