Communications and Relations staff promote International Programs and all of its affiliated offices, centers, projects, units, academic programs, and affiliated community and students groups. This is accomplished through a variety of communications media including the Web, listservs, posters, and other print and online vehicles.
If would like assistance publicizing your IP-sponsored event, please see our Event Publicity Form.
Press releases and media relations
(Need minimum of three weeks lead time)
IP Communications and Relations staff can write press releases that are distributed to local, regional and even national media (television, newspapers and radio) through University Communication and Marketing. To initiate a press release, please contact Joan Kjaer or Lauren Katalinich.
(Recommend three months lead time)
IP Communications and Relations staff includes a graphic designer who can provide graphic design expertise for posters, flyers, brochures, and other publications for units, offices and academic areas directly affiliated with International Programs. Please contact us as soon as you envision a need for design assistance and help us all by planning ahead, whether your project is a revision of an existing brochure or whether it is a single-use poster. To initiate a project, please contact Joan Kjaer or Adam Tisdale.
Please be aware that International Programs requires both a text acknowledgement (such as “Sponsored by International Programs”) and the use of the IP logo (along with the UI logo, per university regulations) on all posters, advertisements, flyers, and other designed materials. This is required when 1) IP is the sponsor or co-sponsor of your event and/or 2) when an IP-affiliated program or center is announcing a speaker or event.
IP and UI Master Calendars
IP Communications and Relations staff manage the IP online calendar on the IP website. Contact Amy Green or visit https://calendar.uiowa.edu/international to submit an event. We can also put your event on the UI Master Calendar.
IP Communications and Relations staff also moderate the IP-announcement listserv, which reaches more than 300 UI faculty, staff, students and members of the general public interested in international lectures, symposia, conferences, and other special events with an international focus or flavor.
If you would like to send a message through this listserv, we encourage you to initiate the message process on your own—you do not need to work through the IP Communications and Relations at this point. The address is email@example.com. After you initiate the message, it will come to our staff for approval and we will get in touch with you if there’s a problem. If you desire further explanation about this process, please contact Amy Green or Joan Kjaer.
International Accents, our online journal, is a dynamic communications vehicle that is regularly updated and, with the addition of audio and video clips, provides an interactive experience for the reader. IP communications staff are eager to learn of your achievements and those of your students, colleagues, research partners and others so that we can prepare online articles, press releases, videotaped or audio taped interviews, and other such materials to share more widely the good work emerging from International Programs. We also want to publicize your upcoming events and speakers and have made a home in International Accents for commentary, essays, and reflections. Please contact us with any and all ideas you may have!
IP Communications and Relations staff can provide general support for editing and adding content updates to IP-affiliated sites. For more information, contact Joan Kjaer or Katelyn McBride.
Video and audio support
IP Communications and Relations has a number of high-quality cameras, video recorders and audio recorders available for our own use in service of IP and for loan to IP faculty or student groups. Easy-to-use Flip camcorders are available for interviews, lectures, documenting travel experiences, taping donors and students who’ve received scholarships, etc. IP also has its own YouTube channel for short videos. Please direct inquiries to Joan Kjaer.
Public programming opportunities
IP Communications and Relations helps facilitate events sponsored by IP’s member groups but also originates many public programs throughout the year which offer opportunities for faculty, staff, students, and members of the community to exchange ideas and expose the international work happening here at the University of Iowa. The IP Communications and Relations staff produce WorldCanvass once a month in the Senate Chamber of the Old Capitol. The public is encouraged to attend the event, which is recorded for later distribution over radio, television and websites. If you’re interested in participating in either of these programs, please contact Joan Kjaer.
