Center for Asian and Pacific Studies Faculty Awards

Deadline: November 1

Available to: All tenured, tenure-track, and instructional-track UI faculty members engaged in research on East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region.

The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) offers a faculty research award for those doing research on East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region. CAPS also sponsors a faculty conference travel award for faculty to travel to, and to give presentations at, domestic or international conferences.

Global Curriculum Development Award

Deadline: July 1

Available to: University of Iowa tenured, tenure-track, instructional-track, clinical, and research faculty.

The Global Curriculum Development Award is given to a faculty member who creates a new undergraduate course, or substantially revises an existing course, integrating international or global perspectives into an undergraduate major. Revised courses must not have been already globally oriented. Only one GCDA is given per year.

Global Research Partnership Awards

Deadline: October 15

Available to: University of Iowa tenured, tenure-track, instructional-track, clinical, and research faculty.

The Global Research Partnership Awards (GRPA) are intended to help initiate new or expand existing international partnerships and/or to build an institutional relationship to facilitate future joint research projects.

International Travel Awards

Deadline: 30 days prior to start date of travel

Available to: University of Iowa tenured, tenure-track, instructional-track, clinical, and research faculty as well as professional and scientific staff members for whom research and scholarship are assigned as one of their primary job responsibilities and have at least a 50% university appointment.  Visiting faculty and postdoctoral scholars are not eligible.

International Programs' International Travel Awards contribute to internationalization at the University of Iowa by funding the international scholarship and engagement of UI faculty. Through the generous support of the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization, International Travel Awards support international travel for research, creative activity, and active conference participation or other collaborative activity.

Major Projects Award

Deadline: November 20 of the academic year prior to the one in which programming would take place

Available to: University of Iowa tenured, tenure-track, instructional-track, clinical, and research faculty.

Through the generous support of the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization, International Programs' Major Projects Award promotes important contributions to scholarly debates and exchanges on international topics, issues, discoveries, and arts. Proposals for events that will take place on the University of Iowa campus and that will enhance international knowledge and understanding for University of Iowa faculty, staff, and students are therefore especially welcome.

Provost's Global Forum Award

Deadline: April 1 of the academic year prior to the one in which programming would take place

Available to: University of Iowa tenured, tenure-track, instructional-track, clinical, and research faculty.

The Provost’s Global Forum Award, made possible through the generous support of the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization, funds this premier annual event on campus focused on international and global issues. The forum brings together experts from the faculty and leading voices from a variety of areas to raise awareness about and contribute to debate on the foremost issues in globalization that face us today.

Special Projects Awards

Deadline: proposals are considered on a rolling basis throughout the academic year

Available to: Individual staff and faculty, programs and departments formally associated with the University of Iowa are eligible to apply. Student and student organizations are not eligible for this award.

Funded in part by the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization, International Programs’ Special Projects Awards support internationalization at the University of Iowa by providing funding for small-scale international activities on the UI campus. Past funded Special Projects have included visiting lecturers, speakers, film series, exhibitions, and other public activities that support international engagement on campus. Awards are made in varying amounts, and matching funds from other UI departments and units are required.

Summer Research Fellowships

Deadline: November 1 of the year before the summer in which the funding will be used

Available to: University of Iowa tenured, tenure-track, instructional-track, clinical, and research faculty. Visiting faculty and postdoctoral scholars are not eligible.

International Programs’ Summer Research Fellowships are developmental awards designed to promote the internationalization of research on campus. The strongest proposals will demonstrate genuine engagement with international issues, whether aesthetic, cultural, historical, political, or global. While such projects will typically involve work at an international location, travel abroad is not required. Each summer fellowship is expected to result in at least one publication, exhibit, or performance.

Impact of the Global Research Partnership Award on UI Research

Since 2018, the Global Research Partnership Award has existed to combine the University of Iowa’s global mission and research mission, while providing seed funding to help UI departments and faculty initiate new, or expand existing, international partnerships that add value to and help advance research and discovery at the university. In 2021, four projects were awarded funding.

Christopher Merrill receives Fulbright Specialist Award

Christopher Merrill, professor and director of the University of Iowa's International Writing Program (IWP), has been selected for a Fulbright Specialists project in Poland at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań for 2022. This year marks the 75th anniversary of the Fulbright Program, with more than 400,000 participants since 1946.
