Virtual Homecoming is a chance share memories from your time at the UI and reconnect with your alma mater, regardless of where you are in the world. During International Education Week 2015 (Nov. 16-20), we will be sharing some of these alumni stories.

Darren Grafius

Darren Grafius graduated from the University of Iowa in 2011 with a Ph.D. in geography. Since graduating, he has moved to the United Kingdom, where he is proud to have gotten married and bought a house with his husband. Darren is currently employed as a post-doctoral research fellow at Cranfield University, where he works on a government-funded consortium project studying ecosystem services and biodiversity in urban environments.

Darren’s favorite place on campus was the terrace on the west side of the Old Capitol building, where he would enjoy the beautiful view looking across the river. At the UI, Darren learned how to rely on his own initiative and drive, and is especially thankful to his adviser, George Malanson, who kept the doctoral experience bearable by motivating him to keep progressing, even in times of stress and doubt.

Although Darren’s work at Iowa was difficult at times, it was very rewarding. He looks back on his experience fondly as a period of strong personal growth that enabled him to follow his dreams, both personal and professional.
