Short-term study abroad offerings allowed mother of four Heather Cook to study business and culture in China

Thursday, July 19, 2018
Heather Cook, mother of four, wife to Andrew Cook, full-time employee at AAB, and online management student through the Tippie College of Business, clearly has a demanding schedule. Even so, she managed to incorporate a study abroad experience to China with the support of her family, scholarship funding (Ann Morse Study Abroad Scholarship and Nancy Hauserman Global Scholarship), and short-term study abroad offerings available to UI students. Cook recently returned from Beijing and Shanghai after participating in the two-week Business and Culture in China course led by Dr. Bob Walker. Cook recently shared some of her study abroad reflections with us.

When in the middle of the desert… my top picks for Ibri, Oman

Wednesday, July 11, 2018
When I say I’m “out here in the desert,” I’m not kidding. Someone told me the last time it rained was 10 months ago, but it HAS sprinkled a couple times. All the mosques are constantly praying for rain. Ibri is located just outside the largest sand desert in the world, the Empty Quarter, and as one of my instructors put it, “Ibri is famous for the color brown.”

Diversity of study abroad offerings allowed UI football player Jake Gervase to earn academic credit in Havana, Cuba

Tuesday, June 26, 2018
A demanding football schedule left Jake Gervase (BBA, finance and management ’18) doubtful he could incorporate a study abroad experience into his undergraduate career—that is, until he learned about global spring break opportunities. Gervase jumped at the opportunity to travel to Cuba through the International Entrepreneurship and Culture short-term study abroad course led by UI faculty members Dimy Doresca (UI Pappajohn Entrepreneurial Center) and Jim Dreier (UI School of Music). Gervase plans to use his fifth year of eligibility to continue his UI football career during the 2018-2019 academic year. While doing so, he will be pursuing a graduate degree in sport and recreation management. We caught up with Gervase recently to learn more about his study abroad experience in Cuba.

Studying abroad in the Islamic world (and surviving the occasional sandstorm)

Friday, June 15, 2018
It’s 4 a.m. Omani time and I just finished suhoor, a.k.a. pre-sunrise breakfast. With some encouragement from Muslim friends back in the U.S., I have dedicated myself to abstaining from eating or drinking from sun up to sun down, as the whole Muslim world does during the Ramadan holy month.

Inside the Sultanate

After three days of orientation, 18 hours on planes, and two hours driving, I am finally in Ibri, Sultanate of Oman!  This summer, I will be studying intensive Arabic (both Modern Standard and Omani Dialect) at the Noor Majan Institute after  being awarded a Critical Language Scholarship through the U.S. State Department.
