Are you a University of Iowa student contemplating studying abroad? If so, you're likely full of questions about what this opportunity looks like for you while studying at Iowa. We've gathered the top 10 questions frequently asked by students interested in studying abroad.

1. I am interested in studying abroad, but where do I start?
The first thing you need to do is attend a Discover Study Abroad (DSA) session. DSA discusses what study abroad is, programs that are available, things to consider, and how to get the process moving. These sessions are offered twice a week during the academic year and once a week in the summer. You can do DSA virtually via Zoom or via an ICON course.  We recommend completing DSA two to three semesters before you plan to go abroad, allowing enough time to explore your options and make necessary arrangements.

2. When should I meet with my study abroad advisor?
Once you've completed Discover Study Abroad and researched potential programs, it's time to connect with your study abroad advisor. Contact the study abroad office, and we'll assign you to an advisor who will guide you through the process.

3. How can I fund my study abroad experience?
Finances play a crucial role in study abroad planning, but don't let that deter you. There are numerous funding opportunities available, such as scholarships, grants, and financial aid. See these financial resources specifically tailored for study abroad programs.

4. Will studying abroad affect my financial aid or scholarships?
Studying abroad shouldn't jeopardize your financial aid or scholarships. Work closely with the UI Office of Student Financial Aid to ensure that your federal financial aid package is appropriately applied to your study abroad program. Communicate your plans with the financial aid office and explore additional scholarships specifically designated for study abroad students.

5. Can I study abroad if I don't speak a foreign language?
Absolutely! While proficiency in the host country's language can enhance your experience, it's not always a requirement. Many programs offer courses taught in English, allowing you to explore different cultures and academic disciplines without language barriers. However, if you're keen on improving your language skills, there are also immersive language programs available to help you achieve that goal.

6. How will studying abroad impact my graduation timeline?
Studying abroad shouldn’t delay your graduation plans. With proper planning and consultation with your academic advisor, you can identify courses that fulfill your degree requirements while studying abroad. We provide you with resources to ensure a smooth academic transition and help you navigate the credit transfer process. Students at Iowa who study abroad have a 32% higher probability of graduating in four years than students who do not.

7. What if I have concerns about health and safety; do I get any support while studying abroad?
Your health and safety are of paramount importance to us. We diligently monitor international situations and maintain strong partnerships with local organizations and authorities. We provide comprehensive pre-departure resources to ensure you're well-informed and prepared. Additionally, we collaborate with trusted partners around the world to ensure you have the necessary support systems in place.

8. How can studying abroad enhance my future career prospects?
Employers value the skills and experiences gained through studying abroad. By immersing yourself in a different culture, adapting to new environments, and navigating diverse academic settings, you'll develop qualities such as adaptability, intercultural communication, and problem-solving abilities. These attributes set you apart in the global job market, making you a sought-after candidate for future opportunities.

9. When should I apply?

Timing is key. For winter session and spring semester programs, applications typically open in August with mid-September deadlines. If you're eyeing summer, fall, or academic year programs, applications typically open in January with late February to early March deadlines. Applying early ensures you have time to prepare and increases your chances of securing your preferred program.

10. How do I handle housing in Iowa City?
One of the first concerns many students have is housing arrangements while they're away. Fortunately, we can assist you in being released from your University Housing & Dining (UHD) housing agreement for the duration of your study abroad program. To initiate this process, we can provide you with a letter to submit to UHD. Please note that we're unable to assist with off-campus housing lease agreements, so it's crucial to plan ahead if you're considering Fraternity & Sorority Life housing or signing a year-long lease for an apartment.

Now that you have the answers to the top 10 questions we get asked by study abroad students, it's time to take the plunge and explore the world! Don't miss out on this transformative experience.
