As the spring 2023 semester is in full swing, International Student and Scholar Services (ISSS) is excited to meet new international students and catch up with returning international students on the University of Iowa (UI) campus. To help you succeed in the new semester, here are our top tips for you.
1. Take pride in what you do
It takes courage to come to a different country, learn a new language, and adapt to a different culture. You should feel proud of what you are able to do at such an early stage in your life.
2. Read and respond to emails sent by ISSS
In order to help you keep current with your immigration status and with other issues, ISSS communicates with you via email regularly. Always read and respond to these emails.
3. Get immigration advice from ISSS
Whether you are already on campus or planning to arrive in the U.S. to begin or resume your studies at the UI, always get immigration information from one of the advisors in ISSS. That’s the best and most reliable place to get immigration advice.
4. Visit ISSS at least once a semester
Even if you don’t think you have any reason to talk to an ISSS advisor, visit ISSS in person at least once a semester to go over your records to make sure everything looks good.
5. Practice English everyday
Practicing your English every single day is the number one way to get used to American teaching methods and classes on campus, especially if you are a new student.
6. Get involved on campus
Whether it’s coming to an event, joining a student organization, finding a campus job, or participating in an intercultural training program, getting involved helps you develop yourself and connect with many people on campus.
