UI International Programs and the African Studies Program invite you to attend an upcoming event titled "Vandalism: On the Limits of Free Jazz." Featuring guest speaker Michael Titlestad, professor in the Department of English, University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, this event will take place on Friday, March 31, 2017, from 3:30-5 p.m. in 304 EPB (Gerber Lounge). 

Zim Ngqawana, one of South Africa’s preeminent multi-instrumentalists, founded a jazz school that was attended by a significant number of young players. One day he arrived at the school to find it vandalized. Instruments were smashed: piano legs broken off; string instruments splintered; and, brass instruments bent out of shape. First in the school, then at the Momo Gallery, in Johannesburg, a work was performed by Zim Ngqawna and Kyle Shepherd on the broken instruments. How, then, does Ngqawna’s project reflect on the creation of free jazz?
