The University of Iowa is encouraging students from certain countries to avoid traveling outside of the U.S. in response to an executive order by President Donald Trump.

Trump's executive order, signed Friday, bars entry for three months to residents from the predominantly Muslim countries of Iraq, Syria, Iran, Sudan, Libya, Somalia and Yemen.

Downing A. Thomas, associate provost and dean of International Programs, said in an email to UI international students and faculty on Sunday.

"We strongly recommend that citizens of these seven countries not travel to any country outside of the U.S. at this time," Thomas said in the email. "If you do, you may not be able to reenter the country."

Students and faculty from those countries can stay in the U.S. provided they maintain their current visa status, Thomas said.
