Zoom like a pro

Professionalism is very important and the key to having successful relationships with your professors, advisors, and future employers. As we've transitioned to more meetings taking place over Zoom, it is important to learn about professionalism in virtual spaces. Here are our tips to Zoom like a Pro!

  • Show up on time

  • Treat this as an in-person meeting
    • Remember that the person you are meeting with can see anything visible to your camera
    • Be careful not to share inappropriate visuals

  • Be mindful and present in the meeting
    • Limit distractions
    • Avoid multi-tasking

  • If you are comfortable and able to, turn on your video. This allows for a more interactive meeting

  • Find private space for the meeting; advisors want to respect your confidential information
    • Mute your microphone when you are not speaking, especially if there is a lot of background noise
    • Only invited guests should attend the meeting. If you would like a parent and/or guardian in the meeting ask the host if they’re comfortable with this

  • If your video is on, make sure you are visible (keep the light source in front of you - if you can, sit facing a window)

  • Give your advisor notice if you are unable to make your meeting

Following these tips will allow you to put your best foot forward in virtual meetings!
