Study Abroad awards listed below are available to eligible UI undergraduate students studying abroad during the summer or winter sessions, or selected short-term programs during a semester.

  Need-Based Grants (Summer 2020; Winter 2020-21)

$250 - $2,000 based on relative financial need (as shown on UI Award Letter) and duration of study

Good academic standing

Current academic year FAFSA must be completed and processed by the UI Office of Student Financial Aid

Submission Deadline

Summer 2020: Thursday, February 20, 2020   EXTENDED: Monday, March 23, 2020* 

Due to classes moving online through at least April 3, 2020, the Study Abroad Office has adjusted the submission process for the need-based application for this session. Students submitting a summer 2020 need-based application (deadline Monday, March 23) should email their completed application to Teresa Kout at This should include the need-based application and UI Award Letter from MyUI.

General Criteria

  • Grants are awarded on the basis of relative need, based on Financial aid Award Summary information 
  • U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents (with completed FAFSA)
  • Must be enrolled in a degree program at the University of Iowa and be in good academic standing
