Study Abroad Need-Based grants listed below are available to eligible UI undergraduate students studying abroad for a semester or academic year. 

IMPORTANT ACADEMIC YEAR AWARD NOTE: Successful Need-Based Grant applicants will be notified of their Fall award as well as the subsequent Spring award.


Need-Based Grants: Spring 2020/Fall 2020/Academic Year 2020-21

Award Range

 $250 - $3,000 depending on relative financial need (as shown on UI Award Letter) and duration of study

Number of Awards 

(application submission number varies by sessions)

~25 Fall 2018; ~50 Spring 2018; ~10 Academic Year, second semester 2018

UI Cumulative GPA Requirement

Additional Requirements

Good academic standing

Current academic year FAFSA must be complete and processed by UI Office of Student Financial Aid

Spring 2020 - Thursday, October 17, 2019

Fall 2020/Academic Year 20-21 - TBA

  • Grants are awarded on the basis of relative need, based on Financial aid Award Summary information
  • U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents (with completed FAFSA)
  • Must be enrolled in a degree program at the University of Iowa and be in good academic standing
