Study Abroad Need-Based grants listed below are available to eligible UI undergraduate students studying abroad for a semester or academic year. 

IMPORTANT ACADEMIC YEAR AWARD NOTE: Successful Need-Based Grant applicants will be notified of their Fall award as well as the subsequent Spring award.

 

Need-Based Grants: Summer 2020, Fall 2020/Academic Year 2020-21, Winter 2020-21, Spring 2021

Award Range

Summer Session or Winter Session

 $250 - $2,000 depending on relative financial need (as shown on UI Award Letter) and length of study

Fall Semester or Spring Semester

 $250 - $3,000 depending on relative financial need (as shown on UI Award Letter) and length of study

Number of Awards 

(application submission number varies by sessions)

~25 Fall 2018; ~50 Spring 2018; ~10 Academic Year, second semester 2018

Good academic standing

Current academic year FAFSA must be completed and processed by UI Office of Student Financial Aid

Submission Deadline

Summer 2020: Thursday, February 20, 2020   EXTENDED: Monday, March 23, 2020*  

Due to classes moving online through at least April 3, 2020, the Study Abroad Office has adjusted the submission process for the need-based application for this session. Students submitting a Summer 2020 need-based application (deadline Monday, March 23) should email their completed application to Teresa Kout at teresa-kout@uiowa.edu. This should include the need-based application and UI Award Letter from MyUI.

Fall 2020/Academic Year 20-21 - Thursday, March 26, 2020*

  • Grants are awarded on the basis of relative need, based on Financial aid Award Summary information
  • U.S. citizens and U.S. permanent residents (with completed FAFSA)
  • Must be enrolled in a degree program at the University of Iowa and be in good academic standing
