Summer SIT Targeted Honors Scholarship


The Summer SIT Targeted Honors Scholarship is applicable to all School for International Training (SIT) approved programs. SIT programs offer topical, field-based coursework with research and independent study opportunities, allowing students to pursue their own interests.

Topics currently available include:

  • Climate and the Environment
  • Development, Economy, and Inequality
  • Global Health 
  • Media, Arts, and Social Change
  • Migration, Identity, and Resilience
  • Peace, Human Rights, and Social Movements

SIT has provided scholarship funding known as Targeted Honors Scholarships. There are specific eligibility requirements (listed below); students who meet these criteria and submit all materials by the published deadline will be considered for awards.

Award Amount

The minimum scholarship will be $1,000**

**The number of scholarships and actual award amounts will be determined by the number of students who are eligible and submit applications. Please review all details listed below before submitting the application.

In addition to the SIT Targeted Honors Scholarship, students can apply for the SIT Federal Pell Grant matching program funds and SIT general scholarship funds. Total SIT awards cannot exceed $3,000/student/summer session. In addition to SIT-sponsored funding, students are encouraged to apply for other Study Abroad grants, federal financial aid, and application UI scholarships. More information

Eligibility requirements

Applicant must be:

  • undergraduate, full-time, degree-seeking UI student in good academic standing
  • currently enrolled in the Honors program at UI
  • accepted or in the application process to SIT program

Selection procedure and criteria

Applications will be ranked based on the student essay by a review committee composed of representatives from the Honors Program and Study Abroad. Students must submit the application and essay (500 words or less) based on these essay prompts:

  • Why have you chosen to study abroad with SIT? What factors led to this decision?
  • Why have you chosen this particular country and topic?
  • How will this experience impact your academic and future professional goals?

If you have a research project in mind, please include your topic and proposed plan as part of your essay.

*The final deadline listed for the application submission is 5 p.m. on the date listed above (close of the business day in the Study Abroad office - 1111 University Capitol Centre). No applications will be accepted after this deadline!
