Eligibility

University of Iowa tenured, tenure-track, instructional-track, clinical, and research faculty with a 50% or greater appointment.

The following are ineligible: Visiting faculty, postdoctoral scholars, graduate, undergraduate, professional students, and student organizations.

Eligible Expenses

  • Faculty travel costs (airfare, lodging, visa fees, ground transportation, and per diem)
  • Non-UI collaborator travel costs (airfare, lodging, visa fees, ground transportation, and per diem)
  • Catering and group meals
  • Research Subject Compensation
  • Paying for or reimbursing foreign nationals for expenses - including travel, honoraria, group meals, etc. - is dependent upon their visa type.
  • International Travel Awards will only fund the applicant's travel costs (airfare, lodging, visa fees, ground transportation, and per diem)
  • Special Projects Awards will only fund events held on the University of Iowa campus

Ineligible Expenses

  • Salary, wages, stipends, tuition, or scholarships

  • Equipment and software
  • Individual meals charged to a UI Visa Procurement Card (PCard)
  • Health or dental insurance premiums
  • Gifts, gift cards, tokens, or other cash equivalents
  • Graduate and undergraduate student travel
  • Support for student organizations and related events

Travel to High-Risk Destinations

U.S. Department of State Travel Advisory Risk Rating

Before using IP funding for travel, please verify that your destination is not under a U.S. Department of State Level 4 ("Do Not Travel") advisory at either the country or regional level. Use the "Learn About Your Destination" tool on the State Department's Travel Advisory Page. IP will not fund travel to destinations under a Level 4 advisory.

Foreign Visitor and Export Control Requirements

UI Policy Manual Chapter 22 – Travel 22.1.f.4.d states that export controls can arise due to the location of the travel, the people with whom you interact while traveling, the items you take with you or ship for use while abroad, and the nature of the information you take with you, even if you do not intend to share it while abroad. Contact export-control@uiowa.edu in advance of travel with questions about what, if any, export control regulations apply to your travel.

  • Prior to booking travel (airfare, lodging, visa fees, ground transportation, and per diem), contact Lauren Powers for Restricted Party Screening per UI Export Controls
  • Foreign Payment Reporting is required when receiving funds from foreign entities (contact Mary Paterson)
  • U.S. citizens cannot use restricted vendors even if not using UI funds

Center for Asian and Pacific Studies Faculty Research Awards

The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) offers a faculty research award for UI faculty doing research on East Asia, Southeast Asia, and the Pacific region.

Center for Asian and Pacific Studies Faculty Conference Travel Awards

Deadline: November 1

Center for Asian and Pacific Studies (CAPS) offers faculty conference travel awards for UI faculty to attend or present at domestic or international conferences.

Global Curriculum Development Awards

Deadline: July 1

The Global Curriculum Development Awards are given to faculty members who create a new undergraduate or graduate course, or substantially revises an existing course, integrating international or global perspectives into an undergraduate or graduate major. Revised courses must not have been already globally oriented. All courses developed or revised for the GCDA must be required for at least one undergraduate or graduate major.

Global Research Partnership Awards

Deadline: October 15

The Global Research Partnership Awards (GRPA) are intended to help initiate new or expand existing international partnerships and/or to build an institutional relationship to facilitate future joint research projects.

International Travel Awards

Deadline: 30 days prior to start date of travel

International Programs' International Travel Awards contribute to internationalization at the University of Iowa by funding the international scholarship and engagement of UI faculty. Through the generous support of the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization, International Travel Awards support international travel for research, creative activity, and active conference participation or other collaborative activity.

Major Projects Award

Deadline: November 20 of the academic year prior to the one in which programming would take place

Through the generous support of the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization, International Programs' Major Projects Award promotes important contributions to scholarly debates and exchanges on international topics, issues, discoveries, and arts. Proposals for events that will take place on the University of Iowa campus and that will enhance international knowledge and understanding for University of Iowa faculty, staff, and students are therefore especially welcome.

Provost's Global Forum Award

Deadline: April 1 of the academic year prior to the one in which programming would take place

The Provost’s Global Forum Award, made possible through the generous support of the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization, funds this premier annual event on campus focused on international and global issues. The forum brings together experts from the faculty and leading voices from a variety of areas to raise awareness about and contribute to debate on the foremost issues in globalization that face us today.

Special Projects Awards

Deadline: proposals are considered on a rolling basis throughout the academic year

Funded in part by the Stanley-UI Foundation Support Organization, International Programs’ Special Projects Awards support internationalization at the University of Iowa by providing funding for small-scale international activities on the UI campus. Past funded Special Projects have included visiting lecturers, speakers, film series, exhibitions, and other public activities that support international engagement on campus. Awards are made in varying amounts, and matching funds from other UI departments and units are required.

Summer Research Fellowships

Deadline: November 1 of the year before the summer in which the funding will be used

International Programs’ Summer Research Fellowships are developmental awards designed to promote the internationalization of research on campus. The strongest proposals will demonstrate genuine engagement with international issues, whether aesthetic, cultural, historical, political, or global. While such projects will typically involve work at an international location, travel abroad is not required. Each summer fellowship is expected to result in at least one publication, exhibit, or performance.
