Student support is more important than ever in higher education; and with increasing priority given to offering opportunities to students in global education, scholarships have a crucial role. University of Iowa students have access to hundreds of scholarship opportunities and many are designated specifically for international study or for international students who attend the UI.
The new UI Scholarship Portal makes it easy to search for scholarships that suit an individual student’s interests and detail eligibility requirements.
The International Scholars Award, for example, offers $2,000 per year, renewable for another three years, to incoming first-year students with outstanding high school records. The Iowa Heritage Award, also for new incoming first-year students, offers $1,500 per year, renewable for another three years, to students whose parent, step-parent, legal guardian, or grandparent has graduated from the University of Iowa with a bachelor’s, master’s, or doctoral degree.
The Iowa Abroad Scholarship is available to all entering freshmen from Iowa and offers $1,000 toward a study abroad experience of the student’s choice, while the Nancy Hauserman Global Experience award and the Robert Baker Study Abroad award are targeted toward business students who would not be able to financially manage a study abroad experience without assistance.
The UI and Iowa’s Sister States have created nine new scholarships for incoming first-year students with outstanding high school records who are residents of and currently reside in one of Iowa’s Sister States: Ukraine; Hebei Province, China; Kosovo; Stavropol Krai, Russia; Taiwan; Terengganu, Malaysia; Veneto Region, Italy; Yamanashi Prefecture, Japan; and Yucatan, Mexico. These scholarships provide $4,000 per year for up to four years or until the completion of a bachelor’s degree, whichever comes first. You can find a full listing here.
This is just a small sampling of the international scholarship assistance available to UI students. In addition to these institutional scholarships, International Programs has a number of funding opportunities for those who wish to study and do research abroad.
The importance of global experiences for today’s students is undeniable, and supported by recent research on outcomes of student mobility. The UI’s commitment to offering scholarship support for international study goes hand-in-hand with its efforts at campus-wide internationalization. As a major public research university, the UI will remain committed to providing opportunities to expand our global reach and the benefits students reap from such engagement.
