Three University of Iowa students and alumni have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants to conduct research internationally in 2012-13. This year's UI recipients are Lynne Ann Larsen, Andrea Rosenberg, and Sean Tolentino.
The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. It is designed to increase understanding between people of the United States and other countries by providing participants opportunities to study, teach, conduct research, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.
Larsen of Marietta, Pa., is a doctoral candidate in the School of Art and Art History in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS). She received a Fulbright award to conduct art and architectural history research in Benin. She will investigate Benin’s Royal Palace of Dahomey and its relationship to the national, cultural, and religious identity of colonial Dahomey and post-colonial Benin.
Rosenberg of Durham, N.C., received an M.F.A. in comparative literature and translation and a master’s degree in Spanish through CLAS. With her Fulbright award, Rosenberg will travel to Argentina to translate from Spanish to English the novel Inglaterra: Una fábula (England: A Fable) by Leopoldo Brizuela, a former resident of the UI International Writing Program. Rosenberg will also research and write an introduction exploring historical and translation issues.
Tolentino of Redondo Beach, Calif., is a doctoral candidate in the Department of Computer Science in CLAS. With his Fulbright award, Tolentino will work with the South Africa Center for Epidemiological Modeling and Analysis in the Western Cape, South Africa. His work will explore the ways in which computer modeling of various methods of HIV prevention and intervention can minimize the spread of the disease.
