‘Saree Conversations’ will trace lost weaving heritage April 21

A series of upcoming events, collectively titled “Saree Conversations,” will explore the art and tradition of Saree weaving in India. All events will be held Monday, April 21, 2014, at the University Capitol Centre (UCC). Admission is free and members of the community are encouraged to attend.

During a SASP talk April 10, Professor Arvind Singhal, a leading practitioner, researcher, and coach of the Positive Deviance (PD) approach, will discuss the implications of PD in addressing complex social problems in South Asia.

March 10 SASP seminar: The Contemporary Hindi Historical Film

The South Asian Studies Program (SASP) will continue its spring 2014 seminar series with a lecture by Corey Creekmur titled “Experiments with Truth: The Contemporary Hindi Historical Film.” The event is free and open to the public and will be held Monday, March 10, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in 1117 University Capitol Centre.

Performance and panel discussion with Indian LGBT activist will be held March 2-3

Join SASP for the following free events March 2-3: Lessons in Drag, a performance by LGBT activist Kareem Khubchandani, and a panel discussion with Khubchandani and two other scholar-activists who have several years of experience with Indian LGBT communities and movements.

Consuming Gold in India is topic of South Asian Studies talk Feb. 24

The South Asian Studies Program (SASP) at the University of Iowa will kick off its spring seminar series with a talk by Nilika Mehrotra titled “Consuming Gold: Reframing Gender, Property and Aesthetics in Contemporary India” on Monday, February 24, at 4 p.m. in 1117 University Capitol Centre. The event is free and open to the public. Chai and snacks will be served.

Artist and creator of Regarding India project to visit UI Oct. 3

Regarding India, Conversations With Artists is an ongoing series of over 60 video interviews with artists representing diverse mediums and subjects, living in various regions of India. The creator of this series, Kathryn Myers, will visit Iowa City Thursday, Oct. 3, to talk about her work. The presentation will be held from 5:30-7:00 p.m. in Room 240 Art Building West.
