Winter session in London provides mix of class and exploration

Leah Jessen, a University of Iowa finance major from Waukee, Iowa, recently returned from the trip of a lifetime in Europe. She enrolled in the winter session study abroad program in London offered by Tippie College of Business and filled her schedule to the brim with sightseeing when she wasn’t in class.

A celebration of global education: International Education Week features events Nov. 8-15

The University of Iowa will join over 100 countries worldwide to celebrate international education and exchange in observance of International Education Week 2013, a joint initiative of the U.S. Departments of State and Education. The public is invited to attend several lectures, workshops, information sessions, and other educational and social events Friday, Nov. 8 through Friday, Nov. 15 as part of this annual UI tradition.

Two UI faculty of Russian receive Fulbright-Hays grant

Two University of Iowa faculty members in the Division of World Languages, Literatures & Cultures (DWLLC) have been awarded $75,000 from the Fulbright-Hays Group Projects Abroad competition. Irina Kostina, Ph.D., lecturer in Russian, and Anna Kolesnikova, Ph.D., visiting assistant professor of Russian language, were selected for their project proposal "Russian Teachers for the 21st Century: Maximizing Teaching Effectiveness by Immersing into Language, Culture and Standard-Based Teaching."

"The Boy Who Harnessed the Wind: Creating Currents of Electricity and Hope" tells the inspiring story of a Malawian man’s determination to bring power and freedom to his village. The book is the 2013 selection for the One Community, One Book annual reading program, sponsored by the University of Iowa Center for Human Rights.

Three UI students and alumnae receive Fulbright research grants for 2013-14

Three University of Iowa students alumnae have been awarded Fulbright U.S. Student Program grants to conduct research internationally in 2013-14. This year's UI recipients are Margaret Ross, Rebecca McCray, and Briana Smith. The Fulbright Program is the flagship international educational exchange program sponsored by the U.S. government. It is designed to increase understanding between people of the United States and other countries by providing participants opportunities to study, teach, conduct research, and contribute to finding solutions to shared international concerns.

Blending Spanish, service learning in Peru

Exploring the rich culture and natural beauty of Cusco, Peru, was just the beginning for Macz Norton when she participated in the Spanish Language and Service Learning study abroad program last summer. This eight-week program combines coursework in Spanish language and Peruvian culture with valuable service learning. The service projects are organized by an onsite company, ProWorld-Peru, which meets with community leaders to develop projects that are both meaningful for students and fulfill a much-needed service for the local community.
