International Spotlight: Star Shen leads Chinese commencement broadcast

Xingyu “Star” Shen, a sophomore psychology and communication studies major, enjoyed serving as commentator for galas and events at his high school in Jiaxing, China. During his first year at the University of Iowa, he was able to put those skills to use. Shen led an effort in May 2014 to broadcast the Tippie College of Business commencement ceremony over the internet with live Chinese commentary.

UI alumna Cat Gaa flourishes in Spain

A study abroad experience during her undergraduate education at the University of Iowa led Cat Gaa back to Spain, where is now thriving post-graduation. Gaa received a B.A. in journalism and international studies from the UI in 2007 and now operates a small language school in Seville, Spain, writes and translates on a freelance basis, and is planning to launch a residency consultation firm.

International Education Week: Engage in the global community

The University of Iowa will celebrate International Education Week Nov. 17-21 with several events and activities, including a public ceremony to honor 2014 International Impact Award recipients Roger Thurow, a UI journalism alumnus, and Selma Jeronimo, a physician who has worked closely with UI medical faculty and students.

UI chosen as 100K Strong signature partner

In recognition of its ongoing commitment to educational exchange between the U.S. and China, the University of Iowa was recently chosen as one of eight signature partners of the 100,000 Strong Foundation for 2014-15. With this new partnership, the UI hopes to increase the number of students studying abroad in China and increase the number of American students studying Mandarin language.

An Iowa hub in Hebei

The state of Iowa’s long-standing ties to Hebei Province in China will continue to strengthen with a new American Cultural Center opening in the provincial capital of Shijiazhuang next year. The center will offer educational and cultural programming in Iowa’s sister state of more than 30 years, and Hebei community members will be able to participate in Iowa's summer, state-wide bike tour RAGBRAI.

International Programs and FilmScene will celebrate their new WorldCanvass partnership with a public launch party on Sunday, Aug. 24, from 7 to 10 p.m. at FilmScene. The event is free and open to the public. Guests are invited to come explore WorldCanvass’ new home and enjoy hors d’oeuvres and live music on the rooftop patio. There will be brief remarks at 8 p.m.
