International Spotlight: Anastasios “Tasos” Papachristoudis

Our spotlight on current students falls on a graduate student new to the University of Iowa, but not new to the state: Anastasios “Tasos” Papachristoudis. Tasos is from Thessaloniki, Greece, and spent the last few years studying in Iowa as a undergraduate before coming to the University of Iowa for graduate studies.

International Spotlight: Lu Shen

Lu Shen was interested in journalism long before she enrolled at the University of Iowa as a double major in Journalism and Mass Communication and Art. Shen, an undergraduate student from Hangzhou, China, studied for two years before making the decision to come to the U.S. She was encouraged by a favorite professor at home to take on the challenge of studying journalism in a U.S. university, and her parents also supported her decision.

International Spotlight: Adair Gallo Junior

Adair Gallo Junior, University of Iowa College of Engineering international scholar from Brazil, was ready to engage in the classroom and Iowa City community as a result of being selected as a Brazil Scientific Mobility Program (BSMP) scholar. The BSMP selects Brazilian students to study in the United States for one year, as part of the Brazilian government’s initiative to give Brazilian university students the opportunity to study at some of the best colleges and universities in the world.

Fostering global friendships

Sometimes, meeting a new person can be stressful because of the unknown. But that wasn’t the case for University of Iowa seniors Hyejung Kim and Jade Manternach. Even though their hometowns are thousands of miles away, Kim and Manternach say they knew their introduction through the International Buddies at Tippie program would go well because they already had at least two things in common—the desire to gain a new friend and learn from each other.

Christiansen professorship is internationally focused

The University of Iowa College of Dentistry has created a new professorship that will focus on increasing the college’s connection with the international community. While various faculty positions with international priority do exist at the UI, officials said this position is the first on campus to work exclusively on the development of international components. Dan Caplan, the head of the UI Department of Preventive and Community Dentistry, will fill the Christiansen Professorship.

UI int'l students develop award-winning Blue Cheese app

A mobile app that has changed the way international students view restaurant menus started with a disastrous date. Mortified after ordering a salad topped with moldy cheese for his dining companion, University of Iowa student RuiHao Min came up with the idea for a visual menu translation app to help international students make more informed ordering decisions.
