Global guests boost local economy

International students and scholars at the University of Iowa contributed more than $101 million toward the state of Iowa’s economy last year, according to data recently released by the National Association of Foreign Student Advisors (NAFSA). NAFSA reports that in academic year 2011-12, international students and their dependents contributed approximately $21.81 billion to the U.S. economy. More than $306 million of that total came from Iowa universities, and while the UI’s international student and scholar population wasn’t the highest of the state universities, the economic impact of UI students exceeded that of the two other state universities combined.

This presentation discusses the effects of India's 2005 Patents Act on the control of medical knowledge and products in India. This new law, which conforms to the World Trade Organization's intellectual property conventions and discontinues India's prohibition of product patents for medicines, is having complex and unintended effects on the production of biomedical pharmaceuticals by Indian drug manufacturers and the products and practices of Ayurveda, India’s indigenous medical system.

Professor, author, and researcher Ann Grodzins Gold will give a lecture Thursday, Oct. 25, from 4:00-5:30 p.m. in 2390 University Capitol Centre (the Executive Board Room) discussing the cultural impact on an Indian community of losing a river of great spiritual importance. The talk is titled, “From Snakes' Blood to Sewage: Mythology and Ecology of a Minor River in Rajasthan.”

University of Iowa junior Jake Thomas wants his study-abroad experience to be different and out of the ordinary. The first place that popped up in his mind was a country several thousand miles away from his home — India. The business major has a keen interest in understanding how business is conducted in India and bringing home some unique skills. He is eyeing the Social Entrepreneurship course in the UI India Winterim program.

Join independent researcher and documentary filmmaker Yousuf Saeed as he discusses his work on the visual, artistic, and religious cultural heritage of India in two separate presentations on the UI campus. The first presentation features the screening of “Four Short Documentaries on Popular Islam in India,” followed by a discussion with Saeed, and will take place at 8 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 3, in E105 AJB (Adler Journalism and Mass Communication Building).

Magazine on U.S.-India relations features UI's India Winterim Program

SPAN Magazine: Bridging U.S.-India Relation, a publication produced by the U.S. Embassy in New Dehli, recently released an article on the University of Iowa's India Winterim Program. This 3-week UI course offers students an opportunity to study and participate with grass-roots organizations in India focused on social entrepreneurship, sustainability, public health and more.

Student Reflections on First-Generation Abroad: A valuable idea

Being a first generation student, my family was new to the whole college experience and all the opportunities I had available to me, including studying abroad. At first, my parents did not understand the benefits of going abroad or why I even wanted to. My mom was mostly worried about me going to a different country, especially a third world country, with nobody she knew and no cell phone to contact me. Both my parents could not relate so I spent a lot of time convincing them to take studying abroad seriously and that studying abroad was a valuable idea. After much discussion, they began to understand how this is a once in a lifetime opportunity I needed to take advantage of while I still can as a student.
