The United Nations Day of Older Persons second-annual celebration will be held Wednesday, Sept. 29, from 4 to 6 p.m. in the Assembly Room of the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center. The event is free and open to the public.
This celebration focuses on international perspectives on aging and culture. Each year a country is spotlighted and the public is invited to explore foods, traditions, language and culture from that country. Last year the program focused on Japan – a country where people tend to live longer.
India is the featured country for this year’s celebration. The event will feature an introduction to the United Nations Principles for Older Persons, Indian food and a food preparation demonstration, music, a Sanskrit display, dance and more.
The United Nations Day of Older Persons is internationally recognized as Oct. 1.
This event is sponsored by the University of Iowa Aging Studies Program in the UI School of Social Work in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the Iowa City/Johnson County Senior Center, the Iowa United Nations Association, the Hartford Center of Geriatric Nursing Excellence: Global Health Initiatives and UI International Programs.
