Exotic Voice of South India comes to Englert Theatre, Mar 8

A week-long workshop and community series by Sarva Sree Foundation (SSFon the Carnatic music of southern India will culminate in a concert Sunday, March 8 at 5:00 p.m. at the Englert Theatre.  

SSF will present Exotic Voice of South India, a Carnatic (South Indian) classical music (vocal & instrumental) concert led by professional musicians from USA and India that will reiterate and further the several elements discussed in percussion and melody workshops of the week. The event is open to the public and tickets may be purchased in advance or at the door from the Englert Theatre ($18 adults, $10 students, $5 youth).

All proceeds from the event will go to the Sarva Sree Foundation.

Musicians will perform in both traditional and fusion style using traditional Indian percussion (Mrudangam & Ghatam) and western instruments (Violin, Saxophone & Keyboard) in a Carnatic context. The concert will feature an exceptionally talented vocalist from Chennai, South India, along with five outstanding accompanists who will come from South India, New York, California and Oregon. The musicians are:

  • Sharreth Vasudevan (Vocal)
  • Arun Ramamurthy (Violin)
  • Prasant Radhakrishnan (Saxophone)
  • Vasanth Vaseegaran (Keyboard)
  • Akshay Anantapadmanabhan (Mrudangam)
  • Dr. Ravi Balasubramanian (Ghatam)

The goal of this project is to promote this rhythmic and lilting form of music to communities and will provide a unique experience and opportunity to the general public and music lovers of Iowa.For more information on this event and related programming, visit www.sarvasree.org
