Student holding Brazilian flag next to graduate herky by Old Capitol

Dear All,

As incredible as it seems, we have reached the end of academic year 2020-21. Congratulations to us all for completing an academic year that has tested students, staff, faculty, and friends in uncountable ways. Graduation this year is especially meaningful because of the challenges we have overcome.

This spring marked our first-ever affinity graduation for international students. This event was held in addition to the university-wide graduation. Our new international student affinity graduation was co-sponsored by International Programs and the Division of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion.

We had nearly fifty participants, and what stood out to me were the slides of each graduate listing their degree, program of study, and favorite memory of Iowa City. Reminiscences about walking along the river, gathering with friends on the Pentacrest, and sharing cultural experiences underscore the personal connections that go beyond academic achievement to create lifelong memories.

We are not only proud of our international student graduates, but are indebted to them for what they have taught us about determination, adaptability, and resilience. Our community will miss the laureates from global destinations but we are happy that they will always be part of the Hawkeye family. As the UI prepares to welcome new international students to our campus this fall, we can take heart by remembering the contributions from the extraordinary international class of 2021.

As the summer begins, please let me convey all my best wishes to you, our faithful and generous friends,
