The Center for Asian and Pacific Studies is hosting two events this week, both free and open to the public. Please join us for “Phonotaxis: Singing the Songs of Interlanguage or 吟歌丽诗 (A Manifesto of Sorts)” and "Chinese in Three Voices” (A reading in English and Chinese).

Interested in learning Taiji? Join the Confucius Institute at the University of Iowa for an introductory workshop on Taiji Wednesday, Oct. 9, from 5:30-8:30 p.m. in 1117 UCC. The course fee is $50 and enrollment is open to ages 13 and up.

Interested in learning Chinese? The Confucius Institute at the University of Iowa will offer a 5-week elementary Mandarin Chinese class for community members starting Oct. 2. Beginning students will learn pronunciation and tones, basic strokes and character writing, and daily conversational phrases.

Distinguished international communication scholar Chin-Chuan Lee will give two public sessions on the University of Iowa campus Sept. 18 and 19, both free and open to the public.

Despite controversy at a Canadian university that led to the closing of its Confucius Institute, officials at the University of Iowa say they have taken measures to prevent the same occurrence. Confucius Institutes, which can be found in several countries around the world, are organizations designed to help create stronger ties between China and the community the institute is located in. These institutes are meant to educate communities about Chinese culture and language.

Chinese calligraphy
Come try your hand at the ancient and beautiful art of Chinese calligraphy at a free workshop Wednesday, Feb. 6, 2013, from 7-8:30 p.m. in 1117 University Capitol Centre on the UI campus. The workshop is open to the public and no prior experience of Chinese or calligraphy is necessary to attend.

Join the Confucius Institute for the final talk in its “Culture for Lunch” mini lecture series on Tuesday, Nov. 6, from 12:15-1:15 in 1117 University Capitol Centre. The topic, “Ancient Chinese Thought’s Effect on Traditional Architectural Culture,” will be presented by Yong Zhu, an associate professor at Beijing Foreign Studies University, China.

Chinese cook-off
Are you a food critic in the making or simply a lover of delicious cuisine? Join us Friday, Nov. 2, for an evening of exceptional Chinese food tasting! Watch as UI Professor and Director of the Confucius Institute Chuanren Ke and other contestants cook up a storm from 6-8 p.m. at the Hy-Vee on Waterfront Dr. in Iowa City. For the event, each chef will give a brief demonstration and background information on their dish and then give samples to the audience, who will vote by secret ballot for their favorite dishes in each category.

Confucius Institute Chinese Calligraphy Workshop
UI International Programs’ Confucius Institute will offer a Chinese calligraphy workshop Wednesday, Oct. 24, from 7:00 to 8:30 p.m. in 1117 University Capitol Centre. Participants will learn the art and history of calligraphy while gaining hands-on experience. No prior knowledge of Chinese or calligraphy is required and all materials will be provided.
