Confucius Institute to offer weekly calligraphy class starting Oct. 10

The Confucius Institute at the University of Iowa will offer a nine-week calligraphy course this fall for community members interested in an in-depth exploration of the history and art of Chinese characters.
The course will be held Wednesdays from 5:30-6:30 p.m. in 2520C University Capitol Centre beginning Oct. 10 and ending Dec. 12. No class will be held Nov. 21. Registration is required and open to anyone 14 years and older. The course fee is $80 and an enrollment form is available at
This course will be taught by Wenwen Fu, a graduate of Hanzhou Normal University, where she majored in Chinese language and literature.  After graduation, Fu taught Chinese at a middle school in Hanzhou for two years and is now pursuing her master’s degree in Educational Psychology at the University of Iowa.
In this class, Fu will give an introduction to the developmental history and art of Chinese characters, guide students to an appreciation of famous calligraphic masterpieces, and lead students in their practice of calligraphy through the Chinese writing brush, as well as the contemporary hard pen.
