WorldCanvass holds its first event at FilmScene

FilmScene and WorldCanvass have recently joined forces in an effort to spark intellectual discussion and community in Iowa City. The new collaboration held its first event, “The Passion that Drives Innovation,” Tuesday night. The two organizations will continue to work together in hosting the University of Iowa television and radio discussion series WorldCanvass once a month on Tuesdays at FilmScene, 118 E. College St.

WorldCanvass opens season six at FilmScene with 'The Passion that Drives Innovation'

Whether it’s the quest to build a better mousetrap or develop a promising new vaccine, it takes courage, inspiration, and out-of-the-box thinking to propel the creative spirit past stumbling blocks, early failures, and the sometimes tepid encouragement of others. It takes passion. At 5 p.m. on September 2, host Joan Kjaer and her WorldCanvass guests will discuss how personal passion can turn a shapeless idea into a tangible reality.

UI conference May 10 explores Writing and Fighting in Modern Japan

“Bundan Snark: Writing and Fighting in Modern Japan” is the theme of an upcoming conference at the University of Iowa exploring an alternate history of the Japanese literary establishment. The conference will be held on Saturday, May 10, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Room 2390, University Capitol Centre (Executive Boardroom).

Marxism in China and North Korea: An International Workshop

An upcoming workshop at the UI will address the question of what happened to Marxism in China, North Korea, and beyond on Thursday, May 8, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. in 1117 University Capitol Centre. The workshop is free and open to the public and no pre-registration is required.
