International Programs will host a Boren Awards Brown Bag (bring your lunch) information session on Wednesday, November 2, from 12:30 - 1:30 p.m. in International Commons, 1117 University Capitol Centre. This information session is for U.S. graduate and undergraduate students interested in finding funding to study less commonly taught languages (such as Arabic, Chinese, Korean, Portuguese, Russian, and Swahili), take courses, or do research in areas of the world critical to U.S. interests. The countries of Western Europe, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand are excluded. Students must fulfill a one-year federal service requirement within three years of graduation.
Boren Awards provide American undergraduate and graduate students with the resources and encouragement they need to acquire skills and experiences in areas of the world critical to the future security of our nation, in exchange for their commitment to seek work in the federal government. The Boren awards offer up to $20,000 for undergraduate study abroad and up to $30,000 for graduate student language study and international research.

Maya Ramaswamy, a Ph.D. candidate in the University of Iowa College of Public Health’s Occupational and Environmental Health program, is currently studying Tamil at VIT University in India on a fully-funded Boren Scholarship. In addition to her language studies, Maya will also conduct a research project aimed at reducing health problems in agricultural workers, specifically developing policies to improve health in tea harvesting workers in Valparai, India.
