Summer 2012 human rights internships are supported by Cmiel scholarships

The University of Iowa Center for Human Rights (UICHR) is awarding seven students a total of $7,500 to support their internships for human rights organizations in the United States or internationally in the summer of 2012. These students, seeking a combination of graduate and undergraduate degrees, have received funding as part of the UICHR’s annual Kenneth J. Cmiel Funded Human Rights Internship Program. Program funds cover travel and living expenses for students who have secured an internship with a local, national or international nongovernmental organization or governmental agency engaged in human rights-related advocacy, research or education.

Iowa Filmmakers Headed to Cannes

Joe Bookman and D. Jesse Damazo, two graduate students from the University of Iowa, were honored Thursday when the Cannes Film Festival announced their Official Selection for 2011. Bookman and Damazo’s film, The Agony and Sweat of the Human Spirit, was selected from more than 1500 entries to screen at this year’s Cinéfondation, the student film competition at Cannes.

UI Student Receives Student Recognition Award from Study Abroad Experience

Lauren Sieben was one of the hundreds of University of Iowa undergraduates that traveled abroad in spring 2010 but one of the few that came back with more than just souvenirs and memories — She was nominated for an award by one of her instructors in Spain for her outstanding performance in a semester-long project, and recently Sieben found out she was one of two students who received the award from a large pool of nominees.
