International Spotlight: Agnes Lam

Originally from Hong Kong, Agnes graduated from the University of Iowa International Writing Program in 2008 as an Honorary Fellow in Writing. Since then, she has accomplished a wide range of achievements. She was awarded the Nosside International Poetry Prize (Special Mention) in 2008 and some of her poems have been translated into German, Italian and other languages.

International Spotlight: Downing Thomas

Dr. Downing A. Thomas is well-known on campus as the Associate Provost and Dean of International Programs. Thomas is also a professor in the Department of French and Italian in CLAS. He received his doctorate in French Literature from New York University, and took a position with the University of Iowa soon after.

UI grad ready for the next adventure

During their youth in Liberia, Theophilus and Rebecca Kollie developed fond memories from their interactions with U.S. Peace Corps volunteers. Little did they know that, decades later, their American-born daughter would complete the circle by returning to Africa as a Peace Corps volunteer after graduating from the University of Iowa.

UI Grad Teaches Iowa Fight Song to Tonga Village

Thanks to UI graduate Ryan Kloberdanz, an entire village in the Kingdom of Tonga is spreading the Hawkeye spirit. Kloberdanz, from West Des Moines, Iowa graduated from the UI in 2006 with degrees in political science and journalism and mass communication. From 2012-2014, he and his wife worked in a rural village of Tonga through the Peace Corps. In this video, we see and hear the residents of the village singing the Iowa Fight Song!

International Spotlight: Evans Ochola

International Student and Scholar Services has been very fortunate to work with some wonderful students over the years who devote much of their time outside the classroom to building a strong community for international students. Dr. Evans Ochola is one of those students who remains a friend to ISSS long after finishing his degree programs at the University of Iowa.

More Americans completing Peace Corps applications

Before some important changes were made earlier this year to the Peace Corps' initial application process, Meredith Gall used to describe the eight-hour, online experience as an illustrative introduction to what would-be applicants were getting themselves into. In July 2014, when the Peace Corps launched a streamlined, one-hour version of its application and prospective applicants are responding.

Encouraging our students to be citizen diplomats

The University of Iowa celebrates International Education Week as an annual opportunity to promote global awareness and engagement and to feature the international opportunities offered on our campus and in our community. Today, as never before, education must be globally oriented to prepare Iowans and students from around the country and around the world to move confidently across borders, to interact effectively with people from different cultural and linguistic backgrounds, and to take pleasure in a life filled with inquiry and discovery.
