The International Scholar Council is a group of University of Iowa staff and faculty members and individuals from the greater Iowa City community who meet once a month to plan events organized for J1 cross-cultural exchange visitors and their families.

Members of the International Scholar Council

The University of Iowa hosts 350 to 400 international scholars each year from many different countries.

The University of Iowa International Students and Scholars is looking for volunteers who want to contribute to programs for the University of Iowa J1 cross-cultural exchange visitors and their families. The International Scholar Council are required to plan, organize, and offer a reasonable amount of cross-cultural activities, including sports, cultural and social activities.

The cross –cultural component of the exchange visitor program gives the participants the opportunity:

  1. To learn about U.S. society and culture outside of their placement.
  2. To learn about the local community in which they are placed.
  3. To share their own culture, traditions and views with Americans.
  4. To appreciate similarities that bring people together.

Time commitment for working on the council is flexible. In addition to helping plan events, scholar council members host events that may be of personal interest. There are usually one to two events planned each month for small groups of 6 to 30 people.

Please contact International Students and Scholars at (319)-335-0335 or email isss@uiowa.edu.
