Program Leader Preparation

Program leaders for University of Iowa-administered programs abroad are carefully selected and prepared to facilitate student travel abroad.  All staff and faculty appointed to lead student groups abroad are required to secure prior approval from International Programs and complete a mandatory training prior to departure.  

Responsibilities are defined prior to travel and typically include:

  • Planning, organizing and directing pre-departure and on-site orientations
  • Advising and counseling students on all aspects of the program
  • Organization and oversight of extracurricular activities
  • Budget management and program evaluation, including financial and academic reporting and a director's final report per program cycle
  • Maintaining communication with host country support staff and faculty
  • Supervising students and monitoring their wellbeing at all times during the program
  • Implementing risk reduction measures and safety plans specific to the location, in consultation with International Programs
  • Communicating and seeking guidance from International Programs staff in the event of an emergency, medical or disciplinary situation
