Freeman-ASIA Award

Freeman-ASIA offers scholarships to undergraduate U.S. citizens or permanent residents wishing to study in East Asia or Southeast Asia who have demonstrated financial need. Through these funding awards, Freeman-ASIA seeks to increase the number of students studying in these countries with hands-on exposure and promoting understanding of peoples of cultures in East Asia/Southeast Asia.

Award Amounts

Freeman-ASIA Awards are based on student financial need to assist with the cost of studying abroad programs and related expenses including international airfare, living expenses, textbooks and other incidentals. These award amounts are based on sessions, financial need, program fees, and expenses with ranges estimated as:

  • Summer - up to $3,000
  • Semester - up to $5,000
  • Academic Year - up to $7,000

Additional Requirements

In addition to studying in East Asia or Southeast Asia regions, recipients are required to give back to their campuses or communities upon return by share their experiences to promote increased understanding of Asia in the United States.

Submission Deadlines

Summer 2020 and Fall/Academic Year 2020-21 application information will open in early 2020. Applications must be submitted by 5:00 pm Eastern Standard Time on the day of the deadline (note: this is 4:00 pm Central Standard Time)

Freeman-ASIA awards are provided through the generous funding from the Freeman Foundation and administered by the Institute of International Education (IIE). Created in 2001, Freeman-ASIA awards have enabled more than 4,600 undergraduate students from over 600 institutions these opportunities.
