Special Considerations for UI Students
Maintain Your @uiowa.edu Connection
Communication from the UI, including the Office for Study Abroad, must be sent to your @uiowa.edu email address. If you use another provider, make sure that your UI mail is forwarded to that address.
Registration at Iowa & Fees
Don’t forget to register in ISIS for your semester abroad! If you’re participating in a UI program, your study abroad adviser will provide you with the appropriate registration and billing information.
If you’re participating in a program offered by another U.S. or foreign university, you must register for 165:500 Study Abroad. A one-time registration fee (not tuition!) will appear on the first U-bill sent to you during the session you’re abroad (i.e. on Aug. 1, Jan. 1 or June 1).
Housing in the UI Residence Halls
If you're currently living in the residence halls and will be leaving before your contract has finished, be sure to cancel your housing before leaving! Obtain/present a letter verifying your participation in a study abroad program from the Office for Study Abroad.
If you wish to live in the residence halls or the International Crossroads Community upon return, make the appropriate arrangements with the Housing Assignment Office (Burge Hall) before you leave campus. Take a Housing Application with you & note the deadline.
Completing Your Graduation Requirements While Abroad
File the "Application for Degree" form on ISIS. Be sure to submit the application by the application deadline. You may still request to participate in the graduation ceremonies if you will be in Iowa City during that time.
For more information about completing graduation requirements while abroad, contact the Registrar's Office at 335-0228.
Deadlines for Financial Aid / Scholarships / Honors
While abroad, you need to stay on top of other application cycles back here in Iowa. In particular, you should be aware of deadlines for applying for federal, state and institutional financial aid for the following year. Scholarship deadlines and application procedures vary considerably. Scholarships that you currently receive may need to be renewed by a specific date. If appropriate, discuss with your academic adviser the procedure/timeline for being considered for membership in your discipline’s honor society. Find out what you need to do before going abroad.
Planning Early Registration For Your Return
In order to participate in early registration for the semester you will be returning to the UI, you will need to make arrangements prior to departure.
- Consult with your academic adviser to determine the classes you need and the classes you want.
While You Are Abroad
- First, make sure your U-bill is paid in full. Registration is blocked for students with an outstanding bill.
- Obtain your four-digit registration number from your academic adviser for the upcoming session or ask your academic adviser to clear you for registering.
- Maintain contact with your academic adviser. Identify the most convenient way to contact your adviser and do so three weeks before early registration begins.
- Your adviser may wish to see a copy of your intended schedule before releasing your registration number.
Note: Some departments (e.g. Communication Studies, Journalism) have an internal registration process prior to the UI’s early registration period. If you are majoring in a department with such a process, start the ball rolling early & stay in touch with the relevant faculty/staff in your department.
