Preparation for Going Abroad

“The first time I traveled abroad, my mother helped me pack. That will never happen again.”

–UI student preparing to study abroad a second time

We encourage students to learn as much possible about their soon-to-be new homes before flying overseas. Many students are able to select classes here at the UI that are directly relevant, or choose to write papers on related subjects. And there are always books to read, movies to watch, web sites to visit.... The more they know before they go, the more they’ll understand when they finally arrive. (On the other hand, no amount of information can substitute for or soften the blow of being there!)

Each semester Study Abroad holds a TIPS for Students Traveling Abroad workshop. Much of the content covered in the TIPS workshop is available in the Preparation section of our web site. You might find that useful reading, too!
