External Awards
Public and private money supporting study abroad is available from a variety of external sources. In previous years your peers have demonstrated that UI students are competitive for these grants! We encourage you to pursue any that appear to be a good “fit”.
In addition to the awards listed below, The Division of Sponsored Programs, 100 Gilmore Hall, serves as the UI’s main clearinghouse for external funding opportunities. There are hundreds of potential funding sources for grants, fellowships, and scholarships that would support international study and/or research. It is not always easy to identify these sources; you may need to search through information about a multitude of funding agencies in order to discover one that might be interested in giving you money.
The Division of Sponsored Programs Resource Information Center is organized to make your search easier. The Center houses directories and databases that describe funding sources for research and study. The Center’s hours are 8:00-12:00 and 1:00-5:00, Monday through Friday.
Note that some external awards are intended for a specific study abroad program(s). Those are listed below, too.
