International Volunteers Student Organization

Who We Are

group of volunteer students and advisers in Peru

The University to Iowa International Volunteers (IV) is a UI student-led organization that gives students the opportunity to volunteer abroad, acquire international experience and expand their knowledge of other cultures. The experience extends far beyond hands-on service; there is also an abundance of opportunities for cultural exchange and personal growth. Moreover, this volunteering opportunity will positively impact both the students participating as well as the community served.

IV is currently the only volunteer abroad organization on the University of Iowa campus. Upon its foundation in 2012, IV partnered with Cross-Cultural Solutions (CCS). In their own words, Cross-Cultural Solutions is a non-profit working to address critical global issues by providing meaningful volunteer service to communities abroad, and contributing responsibly to local economies. Each year, IV sends students abroad for 3-5 weeks with CCS to one of their 12 different locations all around the world.

What We Do

In the months leading up to international travel, IV students participate in local volunteer opportunities that benefit communities abroad as well as fund-raising activities to help fund the annual trip.

Once abroad, students are given a volunteer placement based on personal experience, personal interests, and community need. Volunteer opportunities include teaching and education, aiding the elderly, working alongside people with disabilities, childcare, healthcare, and more.

Outside of the volunteer experience, students are encouraged to explore the local community and participate in cultural activities. This can include visiting local markets and tourist attractions, trying new foods, traveling across country, learning the local language or even taking a dance lesson!

Summer 2015 Destination

Guatemala City, Guatemala: Dates May 18-June 5 (tentative)

Past Destinations- Summer 2013

IV took its first group to Lima, Peru during the summer of 2013.  The group consisted of 13 University of Iowa students ages 18-22. These students volunteered in Villa al Salvador and La Victoria, two very poor districts in Lima. Volunteer opportunities ranged from working with children and adults with disabilities, teaching in local schools, and helping in an elderly care facility.  Outside of volunteering, the group traveled to Ica, a desert oasis, as well as the city of Cuzco, home to Macho Picchu. Through this trip students were able to help the local community, explore their interests, see the world, and make incredible relationships with each other and the people they worked with that will last a lifetime.
