2006-07 Totals

1157 University of Iowa students—801 undergraduates and 356 graduate and professional students—studied abroad during 2006-07.

Comparing the number of undergraduates who studied abroad during 2006-07 to the number of bachelors degrees awarded by the UI during 2005-06 (4101) indicates that approximately 19.5% of the current graduating class studied abroad.

Academic Status

Among the UI undergraduates, less than 1% were first-year students, 8% sophomores, 37% juniors, and 55% seniors.

Field of Study

Undergraduates who studied abroad during 2006-07 had 73 different majors, representing most majors in all the undergraduate colleges.

Destinations

UI undergraduates studied abroad in 55 different countries during 2006-07.

The highest concentration of undergraduates—59%—was in Western Europe.  14% studied in Asia, 12% in Latin America, 6% in Oceania (Australia & New Zealand), and 9% in all other regions combined.

Programs

66% of UI undergraduates who studied abroad participated in 64 UI-sponsored or co-sponsored study abroad programs; 34% participated in programs offered by other U.S. universities, exchange organizations, or foreign institutions.

Duration of Study

41% of UI undergraduates spent a semester abroad, 40% the summer, and 6% an entire academic year.  13% participated in short term programs of 3 weeks or less.

GPA

The average GPA of UI undergraduates who studied abroad was 3.25.  [The UI mean was 2.95 (fall 06) and 2.98 (spring 07).]  72% had an average of 3.00 or higher; 45% had an average of 3.33 or higher. 

Counties

Resident students who studied abroad in 06-07 represented 80 of Iowa’s 99 counties.
