MarÃa Elena Placencia will present a lecture titled "Hijito Vea: Address and reference forms and discriminatory practices in interethnic interaction in Quito".
Placencia is a reader in Spanish Linguistics at Birkbeck, University of London.
This presentation will show how nominal and pronominal address forms are employed to challenge interpersonal relations in the context of intergroup relations in Quito, Ecuador. The address and reference forms exerienced by indigenous peoples in Quito reflect the history of discrimination against Ecuadorian indigenous peoples. and they are one mechanism through which otherness is marked and respectability can be withheld.
