[1]: The Magic Behind the Production of Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore

Special Pre-show Conversation with the Director, Conductor and Designer

When the UI Opera Theatre presents Gilbert and Sullivan’s H.M.S. Pinafore in Des Moines’ Hoyt Sherman Place [2] in late July, International Programs’ WorldCanvass will be on board. 

On July 20, from 6-7 p.m., just preceding the first of two performances to be held in Des Moines’ Hoyt Sherman Place, WorldCanvass host Joan Kjaer will interview stage director John Cameron, music director William LaRue Jones, set designer Margaret Wenk-Kuchlbauer, and members of the cast, sharing a behind-the-scenes look at the story of the opera and its creators, the challenges presented in staging and directing the opera, and much more.  A special treat will come in the form of live performances from the H.M.S. Pinafore cast.

The pre-performance discussion is part of the Lifelong Learning series offered by the University of Iowa Alumni Association [3].  Information about Lifelong Learning and registration for this event may be found at http://www.iowalum.com/lifelonglearning [4].  The live WorldCanvass program will be taped for statewide distribution over television (UITV [5]), radio (Iowa Public Radio [6] and KRUI-FM [7]), and the Internet (iTunes [8]and the Public Radio Exchange [9]). 

The event , which is free and open to the public, is produced by International Programs and presented in collaboration with the University of Iowa’s Alumni Association [3],  Department of Theatre Arts [10], and School of Music [11].
