In this weekly film series, IWP writers present a movie of their choice. This week Asma Nadia (Indonesia) will present a movie adaptation of her short story My Mother Dreams of the Hajj (Emak Ingin Naik Haji). The story focuses on Emak, a widow and her son, Zein, a struggling painter, who despite his poverty, tries to find ways to raise funds to allow his mother to fulfill her obligation as a Muslim by joining the hajj (pilgrimage) to the holy city of Mecca. A series of family challenges whittles away at their savings, causing Zein to consider desperate measures to find money to help her realize her dream.
