International Studies B.A.
Offered by the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, the International Studies B.A. is a multi-disciplinary program of study that allows students to explore opportunities in the humanities and social sciences from such disciplines as history, anthropology, religious studies, economics, political science, geography, world languages, the arts and art history, and global health. The degree prepares students for careers in business, government, international development agencies, non-governmental organizations, philanthropic agencies, and the arts.
English as a Second Language Programs
Located in Iowa City, Iowa, The University of Iowa Intensive English Program (IIEP) provides intensive English instruction and a cultural, social, and academic orientation to the United States. Instruction emphasizes spoken and written English crucial to college and university study in the U.S. Grammar, writing, reading, listening, comprehension, pronunciation, and conversation skills are taught each day at all levels. Students receive 20 hours of instruction per week in addition to individual work in the language laboratory.
International Writing Program (IWP)
The International Writing Program is a unique literary program at the University of Iowa. It hosts a prestigious residency each fall for three dozen international writers, conducts cultural exchange overseas in conjunction with the U.S. State Department, offers a range of undergraduate and online classes, publishes a web-based literary journal, and serves as a conduit for a wealth of information on creative writing, international literature, and translation.
International & Comparative Law Program
The University of Iowa College of Law offers a strong program of study in the rapidly expanding fields of international and comparative law. It does so for essentially three reasons: (1)In an era of global interdependence, one must understand international law and foreign legal systems in order to be an effective lawyer ;(2)As professionals and community leaders, lawyers familiar with international and comparative law are crucial to the formulation of public policy at all levels of our society; and, (3) The study of international and comparative law provides an essential theoretical foundation for all lawyers by affording unique insight into the nature of law and legal process.
International Business Certificate
The objective of the IBC is to provide business and liberal arts students the opportunity to develop a competent understanding of the complexities of the international business world. The IBC complements internationally-minded students' majors by adding an international business dimension to their degrees.
Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures
The Division of World Languages, Literatures, and Cultures includes several academic units: the American Sign Language Program and the Departments of Asian and Slavic Languages and Literatures, French and Italian, German, and Spanish and Portuguese. In addition to providing administrative leadership for all of its units, the division fosters interdisciplinary scholarship in languages, literatures, and cultures. Undergraduate and graduate programs in the division speak to students with varied interests and career aspirations, educating them to become global citizens who understand and are understood by diverse populations. Students are trained to be critical thinkers and problem solvers, capable scholars, lucid writers, and proficient speakers.
